Engineering System in the Royal Ice Factory
The Waterwheel House
The engineering system for capturing and storing the water that would later be transformed into ice consisted of wells, a waterwheel and a reservoir. It was a sophisticated structure for the time, combining animal motive power with human technique.
At the Waterwheel House, the traction force of a donkey ensured the functioning of the hydraulic system that extracted water from the wells by means of the bucket wheel.
Throughout its use, the Waterwheel House has undergone changes in terms of size and architectural configuration, but it has always maintained its usual function.
